Take your class on a journey of discovery. School groups will be welcomed aboard for a 2 hour trip where the children will learn about the ecology of the marine habitats at School Tours Bantry Bay.

Local Wildlife

Bantry Bay and Glengarriff Harbour have an abundance of wildlife. On our Marine Wildlife Tour, you have a chance of seeing Atlantic Grey Seals and Common Seals, a wide variety of birdlife, including Oyster Catcher, Curlew, Grey Heron, Egret, Cormorant and if you are lucky, you might see A White-Tailed Sea Eagle flying overhead.

Dolphins and Whales

Harbour Porpoise are resident all year round and can be seen daily, while Common Dolphins tend to move inshore early summer and are a popular sighting with our visitors, especially when they are in a playful mood and bow ride alongside the boat. Minke Whales are also frequent visitors to our lovely Bantry Bay. We often see them in pairs or small feeding groups.

Bantry Bay Fishing

All children will try a little fishing (4 at a time). Safety glasses are provided and again we explain the life cycle and anatomy of the fish before releasing them back into the sea. Make sure you ask for the kids to sit in the captain’s seat!

Haul A Pot

Next we haul a Lobster pot, where we can find various types of crustaceans i.e. Spider Crab, Brown Crab, Velvet Crab and the Hermit Crab, when available. We would also have a lobster on display and explain the life cycle of these creatures. We would hope to allow the children to throw some of these back into the water to promote sustainability and kindness to our Ecosystem. This has proved very educational with kids that have been onboard with us.

Mackerel Fishing

In the height of the summer when the Mackerel are in, it doesn’t take too long before everyone starts to catch, and when you catch mackerel it is a great feeling. Mackerel are caught using feathers or small lures jigged up and down. All rods, reel and tackle are supplied and full instruction given. You will not only catch the fish but you will see how to fillet them, and prep them for cooking.

We provide life jackets to all. All charters have the provision of a safe and secure trip on-board and a comfortable stable boat with outside seating and toilet facilities. The mackerel fishing trip is dependent on weather and catches cannot be guaranteed, but we will certainly try our best.

Chocolate Making Party

€22 per child. Leahy’s will start off the party by showing you a demo on how they do their chocolates at the farm. They will then do a little history on chocolate and its origins. Afterwards they set you up to make your very own lollipops and figurines, while you wait for the molds to set, you will go out on the farm for a little adventure, will then return to continue the chocolate party, you will be shown how to decorate and package your own chocolates.

Leahy’s supply lunch for the party. The party must have a minimum of 8 paying kids and all kids can bring home what they make. The party takes 3 hours.

Birthday Cake

Ice cream cake made with homemade ice cream from Daisy the cow. €35 for 10 kids. €45 for 15 kids. Vanilla cake decorated with chocolate buttons, smarties and chocolate sticks.

For the Best School tour experience

We are based in Dungourney, near Midleton in East Cork. We have been providing School Tour trips around our farm for the last 20 years. A Leahys Farm School tour is educational, adventurous and seriously fun for school groups.

We provide fully guided tours and we offer the children hands on work with feeding the animals as well as interesting little stories about old machines and contraptions around the museums.

We have indoor and outdoor play areas, Climbing Frame, Adventure Trail and a Crazy Golf course, we also have a large maze, pedal go-karts, a huge selection of animals and lots more, we also have a large coffee shop where the group can sit and eat their packed lunch or we can provide a hot lunch.
There is a souvenir gift shop, if required by the school.
Experience a 100 year old dwelling house on a working farm and see the farm machinery operated at this time.

Historical and Educational Aspects

  • See the tradesmen tools, blacksmiths forge, carpenters workshop etc
  • Horse drawn machinery and the first means of public transport used in Ireland
  • See the Old Irish Crannog.

Involvement and Enjoyment

Children will help to feed a huge variety of animals i.e. Hens, Ducks, Alpaca etc

  • Play with the rabbits and mice.
  • Touch and maybe even hold the snake.
  • Our large maze is a real challenge to all the kids and teachers can try to find their way around too.
  • New to the farm this year, we have quad and barrel train rides for the kids, this is serious fun for all ages.

 

The prices per child are €10.50 and one adult with every ten children would be free, we offer complimentary tea and scones to all free adult in the group and your bus driver is also looked after in the same way.
For Pre Schools the prices are the same but there is one adult in every five children free.
The food prices are €5.50 per child (optional).
