There’s a slime and a place for getting messy and it’s here with us at our Easter Slime Lab at EPIC!

Catherine McGuinness will be returning to the museum for a seriously slimy science lab. Themed around Easter, we’ll be making slime in spring colours, such as pink, blue and yellow! Come along, get creative, get a little slimey and learn something new in this fantastically disgusting workshop.

This workshop is recommended for ages 6 – 12. Children must be accompanied at all times.

Dorothy’s Easter Trail at Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens Cork

Join us for a breath of fresh air this Easter at Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens, one of Cork’s most idyllic locations, on Friday 19th and Sat 20th April. The magnificent Arboretum will be the setting for Dorothy’s Trail, which will bring the history and beauty of Fota alive for everyone.  Amongst the trees and wildlife, follow the woodland path, leading you to your very own Easter treat!

This self-guided Easter Trail follows in the footsteps of the young Dorothy Bell, Fota’s former owner, as she explores her imagination in the gardens. At the finish, claim your yummy chocolate egg, kindly sponsored by Cadbury’s. Come along for an EGGciting day out for all the family that is suitable for all ages!

“Once your little ones have enjoyed their experience, why not make a day of it and enjoy the stunning gardens with a picnic or enjoy some delicious food at Bakestone Café?! There will also be food tents at the end of the trail and entertainment with vintage swing boats and carousel from the 1950s and a fantastic 1970s ice-cream van,” says Victoria Tammadge, Fota House’s General Manager.

Trail runs Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm daily, walk-ins welcome.

All aboard! Easter steam trains are back on the Stradbally Woodland Railway for 2019! Trains running Easter Sunday and Monday, April 21st and 22nd from 12-4pm. 

Tickets priced at €3 for children, €7 for adults with little ones under 5 going free. Tickets sold on the day at the platform and valid for as many trips as you like. 

Our train is fully wheelchair accesible.

Based on feedback from our Spooky Hollow Event last October, we have simplified the registration process for Hoppy Hollow to facilitate faster entry. We have also introduced a fast track queue for those who purchase online. Online Child ticket holders (and their accompanying adults) will join a separate fast track queue and once you present your paper ticket or e-ticket (on your phone) you will be granted entry. Adults pay on the door. Based on the demand for our last event and the fact that we are only running one day our recommendation is to advance purchase. Please allow some time for queuing as is the norm for these types of events.

Viking Weaponry

Find out all about arms and armour in Ireland c. 795 – 1171.  A wide range of reproductions will be presented showing the equipment used in Viking Age Ireland including swords, shields, spears, bows, and axes, the skills and tactics of these shall also be discussed in detail. Finally, get a chance to see a range of domestic Viking goods including unique Irish Hiberno-Norse buckles, jewellery,  hack silver and Dublin coins die.

Dress like a Viking

Come along and examine up close the clothing and trappings which Dubliners of the Viking Age would have worn.   A range of domestic Viking clothing including cloaks, tunics, hats and shoes will be presented alongside accessories including Hiberno Norse belts, brooches and bracelets.   There will also be Military items such as helmets and swords.  Find out how they all were produced and what materials were used, bring any of your Viking fashion questions and we will endeavor to answer!

Meet our Viking Coin Minter from Montague Heritage Services. Watch him demonstrate this special art of coin minting and listen as he shares his knowledge of Viking arts and crafts. You can find Olaf at the craft stall in our Viking Dublinia exhibition on your visit.

Viking Tablet Weaving

Come and see how Medieval spinning and Viking tablet weaving are done. See a Medieval Spinster at work using a drop spindle to turn fleece into yarn, one of the most basic skills necessary for traditional fabric making.  With tablet weaving, complicated braid making is explained and demonstrated with displays of intricate designs upon the loom and tablets.

The Big Dig

Dig for ancient Viking treasure at the Dublinia Big Dig

Put your hard hat on and get your hands dirty to experience life as an Archaeologist.

The Big Dig is all included in your entrance fee to Dublinia! So come and join the Big Dig in the grounds of Dublinia from the 24th to the 27th of April, where visitors will get to take part in our very own simulated archaeology excavation.

It promises to be a fun packed family event where children will get a chance to discover how archaeologists excavate and hopefully find some artefacts and treasures of their own.

Dig Times are at 10.30am/11.30am/12.30pm/2.30pm and 3.30pm.  No booking is necessary and entrance is part of the normal admission price.

Spring is a lovely time at the centre as it coincides with warmer weather, emerging flowers and longer days that inspire us to shake out the dust of winter and get busy.
