School Tours at Dublin Zoo

School Tours at Dublin Zoo offers a unique and fun filled day out to Irish school children.

Primary Schools Programmes (DPSM accredited)

Designed to give students from junior infants to 6th Class a greater appreciation of wildlife.  Sessions are adapted to the age and abilities of the students, with a focus on interactive learning.   Teachers can choose from a range of programmes:

Explore Africa

Go on safari in our African savannah!  The outdoor module takes students on a journey of discovery on the African Plains. Topics covered include African habitats, climate change, animal adaptations, feeding strategies and human impact.

Max 30 students     Duration 1.5 hours

Rainforest Discovery

Discover the world of tropical rainforests at Dublin Zoo, home to a host of colourful birds, mammals and reptiles from rainforests around the world.  This outdoor module allows students to experience the sensation of total emersion in the tropical rainforest environment, with a focus on conservation and awareness of endangered species.

Max 30 students      Duration 1.5 hours

Living Earth

Explore the exciting world that exists in your back garden on the Zoo’s Family Farm.  Students are given hands-on experience planting and growing their own food before creating their very own ‘Watercress Warrior’.  They can also investigate various habitats through pond-dipping and searching for mini-beasts using scientific equipment. Emphasis is placed on sustainability, while other topics include habitats, animal adaptations and native species.

Max 30 students     Duration 1 hour

Back to Basics with Butter Churning

In this module, students explore where their food comes from and gain an insight into Irish farming, both past and present, and its essential role in producing our food.  After a detailed tour of our Family Farm, they will get an interactive experience, learning about the animals and the techniques employed in Irish farming.  They can try their hand at butter churning which helps them understand how food was produced in the past.

Max 30 students    Duration 1 hour

Self-directed visits are a flexible option, allowing you to create your own Zoo experience, and teachers can dowwnload a range of worksheets and resources from our website – www.dublinzoo.ie – before each visit.

Learning & Discovery Centre

Our Learning & Discovery Centre is not to be missed during an educational visit. It contains a collection of animal ‘biofacts’ (furs, skulls, bones, etc.) along with other interesting artefacts. It is the perfect opportunity to get close and personal to animals.

The Centre is a great educational tool to use all the senses, particularly touch (as you can touch everything!). It introduces topics such as conservation, animal adaptations and the protection of animals from illegal trading and poaching.

[The Centre is open free to the public seasonally but can be booked  exclusively by groups all year round)
